Three charges are at the corners of an isosceles triangle as shown in the figure (Figure 1) . The +q1 = 5.25uC and -q1 = 5.25uC charges form a dipole.

A) Find the magnitude and direction of the net force that the = 13.0 charge exerts on the dipole.


B) For an axis perpendicular to the line connecting the two charges of the dipole at its midpoint and perpendicular to the plane of the paper, find the magnitudeand direction of the torque exerted on the dipole by the = 13.0 charge.

the force on the positive charge =
F1 = Kq1 q2 / r^2 = 0.607 ( 0.65 i - 0.75 j)
F2 = 0.607 ( - 0.65 i - 0.75 j)
Fnet = 0.911j n.

the torque on the dipole = Fnet X d
= 0.65 X 0.607 X 1.5 x 2 = 1.18 N-cm.
