So do you sent the problem up like:

Find all numbers such that the sum of the number and 10 is less than 3 times the number. So do you set the problem up like: x + 10 = 3x ?? ----- Yes, because you want to solve the INEQUALITY. In order to do that you need to determine the boundary of the INEQUALITY which is the solution to the EQUALITY. --------------- So, x+10 = 3x 2x = 10 x = 5 is the boundary. ----------------- Now you check a value on each side of the boundary to see where the solutions for the INEQUALITY lie. --- Check x = 10 in the INEQUALITY you get 10 + 10 > 30 That is false so there are no solutions to the right of x=5. ---- Checking x = 0 in the INEQUALITY you get 0+10>3*0 That is true so all the solutions are to the left of x = 5. ------------- Solution: x < 5 ========================= Cheers, Stan H.

You were close! But notice that the probem says "...the sum of the number and 10 "is less than" 3 times the number, so this can be expressed as the inequality: {{{highlight(x+10 < 3x)}}} where x is the number.
