A FLORIST PLACED AN ADVERTISEMENT IN THE NEWSPAPER. THE NEXT WEEK THE FLORIST REPLACED THE ORIGINAL ADVERTISEMENT WITH A NEW ONE, BUT THE LENGTH AND WIDTH OF THENEW ADVERTISEMENT WERE 1/2 THE ORIGINAL. HOW MUCH GREATER IS THE AREA OF THE ORIGINAL ADVERTISEMENT THAN THE REPLACED ADVERTISEMENT?

lets say that the length is 'L' and the width is 'W'

Area of original = L*W

Now the length is '.5L' and the width is '.5W'

Area of new ad = (.5L)(.5W) = .25LW

The new area is 1/4 of the original.
